Sepsis to Saved: How Patient Connect 360 can help

A lady was admitted to the hospital. She had the viral flu. Her age, BP and other problems like high fever, elevated heart rate, and breathing problems were the reason for her being kept under observation.

After 7 days of treatment, she was showing recovery. Doctors predicted to discharge her on the 9th day.  But on the 8th day, her health condition again started to degrade. Again, a few lab check-ups were done, and she was diagnosed with pneumonia. The doctors became extra careful about her health and started to keep constant track of her health. This time, the medications given to her were not showing significant improvement in her health. On the 20th day after her admission into the hospital, she was diagnosed with lung and liver failure. Then doctors got very worried and they found out that she was suffering from sepsis. On the 25th day, she, unfortunately, passed away.

What is sepsis?

Sepsis is a life-threatening illness caused by your body’s response to an infection. Your immune system protects you from many illnesses and infections, but it’s also possible for it to go into overdrive in response to an infection.

What are the symptoms of sepsis?

There are three stages of sepsis: sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock. Sepsis can happen while you’re still in the hospital recovering from a procedure, but this isn’t always the case. It’s important to seek immediate medical attention if you have any of the below symptoms. The earlier you seek treatment, the greater your chances of survival.

Symptoms of sepsis include:

  • a fever above 101ºF or a temperature below 96.8ºF
  • heart rate higher than 90 beats per minute
  • breathing rate higher than 20 breaths per minute
  • probable or confirmed infection

A prediction of disease progression feature of AI system in PatientConnect360 can track all such situations and predict future health conditions. Our AI system can predict disease progression of 5 days and more and show such occurrence of adverse events. In the above case of a lady suffering from sepsis, imagine if the alert given at 5th day of the trial to the doctors. Her immune system was much better at that time and she could have been saved from sepsis. The big problem about sepsis is it may occur to anyone and people can lose their lives due to late actions taken by their doctors during treatment. Also, doctors cannot predict such events among the number of patients they deal with every day.

We have designed an AI system which analyses and finds similar patients with respect to their height, weight, age, sex, diseases, abnormalities and based on lab tests’ history. AI system plots a line chart of disease progression, for say, 10 days of the trial of similar patients and current patient’s trial who has logged in the app. The data is used for the lab and patients’ other details present in hospitals database. Doctors can compare and understand; how a current patient is behaving with respect to other similar patients. If similar patients have shown adverse events on the 10th day of the trial, then the current patient may also behave the same way. This can be said if for some days both the graph matches.

Not only sepsis, but also other life-threatening events can be avoided, and patients’ lives can be saved. PatientConnect360 is implementing more AI features like the disease progression and gives useful and significant outputs helpful for doctors and patients.
